The Meeting Spot
2024
Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Madison, Maine
cob (clay, sand, straw), pipes, clay, pulleys, plants, buckets, cushions
Day 1: ask studio neighbors if they are okay with me digging a huge hole + work zone in front of the building. commit to the unknown, the terrifying. no going back once the shovel strikes.
Day 39: walls are collapsing under the weight of fresh cob. No wonder these structures take months or years to build. *Ask* if I can have a bonfire in the structure to dry it out. Marshmallows?
Day 59: Great conversation with Dana and Daniel, giving me the confidence to let it be in its current state: purposely undone and loose as an invitation for play. what invites adults?
Day 62: The Meeting Spot held what I hoped and beyond - folks hung out for 3 hours, coming and going during open studios. Lounging against the cool cob, blowing whistles, and resting. Murmurs: much-needed, oooh a place to stop, whoa!, can I pull that?
